High honors

There are authors who follow you all your life. There are stories that get stuck in your brain. There are some people who remain with you through all your life.  Sophia Mello Breyner Andersen is one of those people. Writer, poet with a political conscience. Among other awards she was the first woman to win Camões Award, the most prestigious Portuguese award for literature. One year before her death she won the prestigious Queen Sophia Award for ibero-american poetry. Today (July 2nd 2014) it's the 10th anniversary of her death. And it also marks the repatriation of her remains to the National Pantheon. The same place where it lays the remains of Presidents, historical and cultural figures. So today, we celebrated not her death but her extraordinary life. And oh, extraordinary it was.

25 de Abril
Esta é a madrugada que eu esperava
O dia inicial inteiro e limpo
Onde emergimos da noite e do silêncio
E livres habitamos a substância do tempo

But good news walk hand in hand. And honors are never enough. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Carlos do Carmo - one of the greatest fadistas to ever walk on this earth. That he was great, we all knew. He had won every single musical award to be won in Portugal. And just three years after Fado made it UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list (after a long battle of six years) Portugal's national music is recognized again. This time one of the greatest is honored with the most prestigious award worldwide - the Lifetime Achievement Career GRAMMY. Carlos do Carmo, become the first Portuguese to receive such higher honor. The 15th Annual Latin Grammy Awards  - Special Award Honorees will take place on November 19 in Las Vegas, USA.
"Hailing from Portugal, Carlos do Carmo is one of the greatest fado singers of his time. His mother, legendary singer Lucilia do Carmo, was a great influence on his career, which has lasted more than 50 years. While fado has been the core of his music, Carlos do Carmo's distinctive style of singing is marked by the special timber of his voice along with his personal affinity for French pop balladry and Brazilian bossa nova, creating an unmistakable and definitive sound that distinguishes him as one of the most iconic voices of Portuguese music. Among his vast repertoire of songs, do Carmo is most recognized for "Lágrimas De Orvalho," "Lisboa Menina E Moça" and "Canoas Do Tejo." He has received international acclaim and has performed to sold-out crowds in landmark venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, the L'Olympia in Paris and Carnegie Hall in New York. He played a key role in making fado part of UNESCO's World Heritage Cultural Patrimony via his countless concerts, recordings and participation in director Carlos Saura's 2007 film Fado. He continues touring actively." Source.
